The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive ordering the immediate withdrawal of police personnel previously deployed to seal off local government secretariats in Rivers State. This development was announced on Monday through a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Command, Grace Iringe-Koko.

IGP’s Directive and Police Withdrawal

The statement explained, “The newly deployed State Commissioner of Police, Bala Mustapha, conveyed the directives of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, for the immediate withdrawal of all police personnel previously deployed to seal and safeguard the Local Government Secretariats in the state.”

This move marks a shift in the role of the police in the ongoing political tension in the state, as the Rivers State Police Command reiterated its neutrality in political matters. The force emphasized that its primary duty is to ensure the smooth functioning of democratic institutions and maintain public order.

They further assured the public that they would only intervene in cases of crisis or a breakdown of law and order, at which point they would take emergency measures to restore peace.

Police Commitment to Neutrality and Public Order

The Rivers State Command reassured residents of its continued dedication to maintaining peace and order across the state, highlighting the professionalism of its officers in carrying out their responsibilities. Residents and stakeholders were urged to remain calm and law-abiding as the situation continues to develop.

Why it Matters

While the police force asserts its neutrality, the withdrawal can be seen as a sign that Governor Fubara is consolidating more control in Rivers State. This move might reduce tensions, but the ongoing political conflict is far from over, with legal battles anticipated in the near future. The police stepping back from the political fray is significant, especially in a country where security agencies have sometimes been used as tools in political struggles.
