With the increasing uncertainty regarding issues of security, logistics and other scenarios, efforts are still on top gear for the much anticipated Anambra guber poll which is scheduled to hold on November 6.

The chairman of INEC, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, has expressed a high level of satisfaction towards preparedness to ensure the election is hassle free as all non-sensitive materials have been moved to the 21 Local Government Areas of the State.

However, he said the state office in Awka is arranging for stakeholders to inspect sensitive materials at the premises of the CBN in Awka once the Central Bank of Nigeria delivers them.

Prof Yakubu said sensitive materials will be moved under security escort to each Local Government Area from where they are distributed to the Registration Areas or Wards and finally to Polling Units on Election day.

These are excerpts from the Chairman’s briefing in a special consultative meeting with political parties in Abuja, but beyond election logistics are we really prepared?

The uncertainty of the “unknown gunmen”, IPOB’s sit at home order/threat, one will hope there are security apparatus in place to ensure security of lives and properties.

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba has assured residents living in Anambra that 34,587 operatives inclusive of special forces, marine Police operatives and three helicopters will be deployed for the election

The need to deploy the operatives are based on the outcome of threat analysis carried out by the force said the IG.

Beyond logistics and deployment of operatives a robust intelligence and security architecture needs to be in place to safeguard lives and properties

It will be in the best interest of the country if no stones are left unturned, and there are no or limited records of violence/attacks

We have a very bad security situation that we are tackling with, an escalation in the South East will spell doom for the country.
