On Wednesday, the Federal Government and labour unions met to talk about the recent rise in fuel prices. The meeting took place at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and was meant to address worries about the fuel price increase.
Representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), including NLC President Joe Ajaero and TUC President Festus Osifo, were at the meeting.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, called the meeting a “work-in-progress,” meaning it’s a continuing conversation between the government and labour unions.
Before the meeting, the NLC had said they were unhappy with the latest fuel price increase, criticising the government for not doing enough to help people deal with the higher prices.
“The increase will make poverty worse, reduce how much we can produce, and cause people to lose their jobs,” the NLC said.
Labour leaders asked the government to think again about raising the rate, saying that past increases didn’t work well to improve the economy.
