Cameroonian President Paul Biya, aged 91, returned to the country’s capital, Yaoundé, on Monday after several weeks of absence, which had fueled speculation about his health. His return was broadcast by the state television network, CRTV, which showed the president arriving at Yaoundé’s international airport. Biya appeared in public alongside his wife, Chantal, as they greeted officials on the tarmac.

Public Reception and Motorcade

Biya’s return was met with a jubilant crowd, many of whom wore outfits displaying his portrait. Supporters lined the roads as his motorcade made its way from the airport to the presidential palace. Drumming and chanting echoed as the crowd celebrated his arrival. CRTV dedicated a special program to the president’s return, highlighting the public’s enthusiasm.

Speculation Surrounding Biya’s Absence

Biya’s disappearance from public view sparked widespread rumors and concerns about his health. His absence followed his departure from Beijing after attending a China-Africa cooperation summit in early September. As weeks passed without any official updates, speculation grew, and questions about his whereabouts dominated local discussions.

CRTV addressed these concerns during the broadcast, with one presenter declaring, “Today the president is on his way and this will put an end to all the speculation.”

Flight Tracking and Official Sources

Flight tracking websites revealed that a Boeing aircraft, registered as CMR001 and known for transporting the president, departed from Geneva late Monday morning. Official sources confirmed that Biya had been residing in Geneva for several weeks, contributing to the uncertainty about his location.

Public Display of Support

As Biya’s return neared, large posters appeared across Yaoundé, welcoming him back. “Welcome home, Mr. President of the Republic,” read one billboard, featuring a portrait of the president on a blue background. The displays underscored the government’s effort to reassure the public and celebrate Biya’s return.

Government Response to Health Rumors

On October 8, following mounting rumors, the government issued a statement announcing that Biya would soon return to Cameroon. Shortly afterward, local media were officially prohibited from discussing the president’s health, adding to the mystery surrounding his condition.

Biya also notably missed significant international events during his absence, including the United Nations General Assembly in New York and a summit for French-speaking countries in Paris. His absence at these forums further fueled speculation about his health.

Conclusion

President Paul Biya’s return to Cameroon appears to have alleviated some concerns about his well-being. However, the government’s handling of the situation and the continued ban on discussing his health have left lingering questions. At 91 years old and after over four decades in power, Biya’s health remains a subject of significant public interest, even as the state seeks to control the narrative.
