With the 2024 US presidential election right around the corner, both parties are ramping up their efforts, especially in the key swing states that are likely to determine the outcome. These battleground states are getting the most attention from Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, as they work to win over voters.

Kamala Harris Hits Key Swing States

Vice President Kamala Harris has been busy hitting major swing states like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, all in one day. During her stops, she’s been urging voters to back the Democratic ticket, reminding them how important their votes are for securing a win. The Democrats know that these states are crucial for their chances, and Harris is making sure they don’t leave anything to chance.

Trump on the Campaign Trail

On the other side, Donald Trump has been hitting the road too, with a recent rally in North Carolina. Both candidates are laser-focused on the swing states, where early voting is showing a close race. The atmosphere is tense, with both parties feeling the pressure as polls show a neck-and-neck battle.

Polls Show a Tight Race

A poll from The Economist suggests Trump now has a slight edge over Harris for the first time in two months, which has made the campaigns even more intense. Swing states are getting a lot of attention, as just a small shift in voter support could tip the scales either way.

How the Electoral College Works

In the US, the presidency is not decided by a direct popular vote but by the Electoral College. Voters in each state cast ballots to appoint electors, who then vote for the president. To win the presidency, a candidate needs 270 out of 538 votes in the Electoral College. Most states follow a “winner-takes-all” system, meaning the candidate with the most votes in a state receives all of that state’s electoral votes.

This winner-takes-all approach makes swing states crucial because whoever wins the most votes there takes home all the electoral votes.

Why Swing States Matter So Much

Swing states, also called battleground states, are places where neither party has a clear majority, making them highly competitive. In these states, political loyalty can shift from election to election, so they’re often the deciding factor in who wins the presidency. That’s why both parties focus so much on these areas — a small lead in a swing state can make or break a candidate’s chances.

In 2016, Trump shocked everyone by narrowly winning some of these key states, even though he lost the popular vote. His victory came down to just 77,000 votes across Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. In 2020, Biden flipped the script, winning by slim margins in similar swing states, even though he won the popular vote by nearly 7 million.

The 2024 Election and the Role of Swing States

Once again, the 2024 election is expected to be decided by swing states. Right now, the key battlegrounds include Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada. In these states, the race is incredibly close, and even a slight swing in voter support could make a huge difference in who wins the electoral votes.

Both the Harris and Trump campaigns are laser-focused on these swing states because winning there could determine the next president. The ability to sway undecided voters in these areas will likely be the deciding factor in the election.

Conclusion

With the election just around the corner, both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are pouring their efforts into the swing states that will decide the race. The Electoral College system, combined with the competitive nature of these states, means that even small shifts in voter support could have a big impact on the final result. As the campaigns heat up, all eyes are on these crucial battlegrounds where the future of the presidency will be decided.
