Manchester United powered into the EFL Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday with a 5-2 win over Leicester City as interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy marked his first game in charge with a victory. Van Nistelrooy stepped in after Erik ten Hag was dismissed, with Sporting’s Ruben Amorim due to arrive imminently as permanent manager.

United began brightly, and Casemiro’s powerful long-range strike found the top-right corner in the 15th minute of the game. Alejandro Garnacho extended that lead a further 13 minutes later, finishing off Diogo Dalot’s cross. Leicester responded as Bilal El Khannouss squeezed a shot past Altay Bayindir before Bruno Fernandes restored the two-goal cushion with a deflected free-kick.

Just minutes later, Casemiro struck again, firing in a rebound, though Conor Coady pulled one back for Leicester just before the half. Fernandes then capped off the scoreline in the second half, rounding Danny Ward after a misplaced pass by Caleb Okoli.

The Foxes struggled in this trip to Old Trafford, where they have lost 12 of the last 15 visits. Dominant United was thus backed by a 2.95 xG compared to Leicester’s 0.99 as Van Nistelrooy’s first win in style was sealed.
