Newcastle United reached the EFL Cup quarterfinals by defeating Chelsea 2-0 at St James’ Park on Wednesday night. Eddie Howe’s side scored twice in three first-half minutes to seal progress, days after their defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League.
The scoring was opened for the Magpies in the 23rd minute after Chelsea were caught in possession, as Sandro Tonali quickly set up Alexander Isak to calmly finish past goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.
There was little let-up as, moments later, an Alexander Isak deflected cross was deposited into his own net by Axel Disasi to double the advantage for Newcastle.
Chelsea pressed for recovery, dominating the second half, but Joao Felix’s 75-minute chip floated narrowly wide of goal. Newcastle substitute William Osula almost added a third, hitting the post in a swift counterattack, before the Magpies held firm for the win.
This result means Newcastle reach their fourth EFL Cup quarter-final in five seasons and extend an unbeaten run in the competition when scoring first. It was also an important momentum shift, with the Magpies recording just a second victory in seven games and Chelsea suffering only a second loss in 11 matches.
