Cristiano Ronaldo believes he may retire as a footballer in the next year or two and wants to savor every last second of an illustrious career. In Lisbon, on Friday night, the 39-year-old forward was in sublime form, scoring twice-an overhead kick-to spearhead Portugal to a 5-1 mauling of Poland in the Nations League as the victory clinched top spot in Group A1.

This sends Ronaldo’s overall career tally to an astonishing 910, with 135 for Portugal, while he has netted five goals in as many Nations League appearances this campaign to continue shining on the international stage.

Speaking of his future, Ronaldo spoke of the need to enjoy his football. “Planning the retirement. It will happen in a year, two years, I don’t know,” he said. “It’s about feeling motivated, enjoying training and matches. When I no longer feel that, I’ll step away. It’s been an excellent career.”

The target, though many believe to be an elusive 1,000-goal mark for Ronaldo, was dismissed as irrelevant by him. “It’s normal that everyone wants it, but I’m not thinking about it. I’m enjoying every moment; most of all, I enjoy playing with the national team.”

Finally, approaching his 40th birthday in February, Ronaldo does not run out of steam regarding his winning ways and inspires fans from all over the world.
