Implementation of ₦70,000 Minimum Wage

Wike approved the payment of the new minimum wage as part of efforts to improve workers’ welfare. This approval was confirmed in a statement by the acting Head of Civil Service in the FCT, Grace Adayilo. The payment also includes arrears, aligning with the agreement reached with the labour union.

The implementation is seen as a fulfillment of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to uplift the welfare of civil servants.

Increased Productivity Expected

During the inspection of the ongoing construction of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal access road on Tuesday, Wike emphasized that higher wages come with greater expectations.

“I expect that the workers will also see this as a boost and be more committed for us to achieve the development that is required in the city,” Wike stated. He urged civil servants to remain dedicated, saying the improved remuneration should translate to enhanced performance and commitment.

Bottom Line

The ₦70,000 minimum wage implementation in the FCT highlights the government’s commitment to worker welfare. However, Wike’s call for increased productivity serves as a reminder that improved compensation must go hand in hand with greater dedication to achieving developmental goals in the capital city.
