Tobore Emurerhi, a commercial bus driver in Benin City, the capital of Edo State, was sentenced to four days of community service for breaking the state’s traffic laws by a mobile court there.
The driver of a Nissan Vanette Bus with the license plate BEN 34 XE was also fined N50,000.
Emurerhi is one of the motorists stopped by the Edo State Public Works Volunteers (PUWOV) for obstructing traffic (one-way). The prosecution and arrest are part of the administration led by Governor Godwin Obaseki’s renewed attempts to bring calm and order back to the streets of Benin city.
The commercial bus driver who entered a guilty plea was fined N50,000 and given a four-day community service sentence in which he was required to clean the drainage at Third Junction in Benin City for two hours each day.
Mukhtar Yusuf-Osagie, the Edo State PUWOV Coordinator, said the government is still committed to restoring sanity and order on the city’s roads and will continue the state’s campaign against traffic offenders, making sure that all at-fault drivers are detained and properly prosecuted.
The PUWOV Coordinator noted that while the government increases efforts to ensure the free flow of traffic and ensure safety on our roads. The coordinator described as alarming the frequent disregard of traffic rules and regulations by motorists in the state (one-way).
