The Abia State Government, led by Governor Dr. Alex Otti, has approved the payment of fees for Abia students studying at SRI SAI University in India, who were abandoned by the previous administration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The decision, which was announced on Thursday, is a major relief for the affected students, who had been stranded in India due to the non-payment of their fees by the previous government.

According to a statement released by the Office of the Governor, the payment of the fees is part of the current administration’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare and well-being of Abia citizens, particularly students who are seeking to acquire knowledge and skills abroad.

The statement read, “Governor Dr. Alex Otti has directed the immediate payment of fees for Abia students studying at SRI SAI University in India, who were abandoned by the previous administration. This decision is in line with our administration’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare and well-being of Abia citizens, particularly students who are seeking to acquire knowledge and skills abroad.”

The statement further noted that the payment of the fees is a testament to the current administration’s resolve to address the challenges facing Abia students in foreign universities, who were neglected by the previous government.

“The payment of the fees is a demonstration of our administration’s commitment to ensuring that Abia students in foreign universities are able to complete their studies without any hindrances. We are determined to support our students in achieving their academic goals, and we will continue to work towards providing the necessary support and resources to ensure their success,” the statement added.

The decision has been hailed by stakeholders in the state, who have commended Governor Otti for his prompt intervention in addressing the plight of the stranded students.

Reacting to the development, the President of the Abia State Students Association, Comrade John Okeke, expressed gratitude to Governor Otti for his gesture, describing it as a “life-saving intervention.”

“We are grateful to Governor Otti for his prompt intervention in paying our fees. This decision has saved us from a lot of hardship and uncertainty. We commend the Governor for his commitment to the welfare of Abia students, and we assure him of our support and cooperation in his efforts to develop the state,” Okeke said.

The payment of the fees is expected to be completed within the next few days, and the affected students have been advised to contact the Office of the Governor for further information and guidance.
