In a decisive move to revitalize commercial activities in Yola town, the Adamawa State Government has approved a budget of N2,937,217,120.45 for the reconstruction of Yola market which was gutted by fire incident about 5 months ago.
This announcement was made by John Dabari, the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry following a SEC meeting chaired by the Deputy Governor, Kaletapwa Farauta, held in Yola Government House. The new market design will include 69 modern shops and is expected to be completed within a nine-month timeframe.
While delivering his speech, Dabari emphasized that the reconstruction will be advance buildings with sophisticated architectural models that will be aimed at preventing potential fire hazards. He said, “The government understands that it is necessary to reconstruct the market so as to enable those who are affected by the fire to continue with their businesses”
Meanwhile, in addition to rebuilding the market, the Security and Exchange Commission has advised citizens living near riverside to evacuate. This was due to predictions from Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) that on September 17th, 2024, there would be controlled releases of water from the Lagdo dam in Cameroon.
The controlled releases, initially set at 100m% (approximately 8,640,000m³ per day), may increase over the following week, depending on the inflow from the Garoua River, a significant contributor to the Benue River.
