Airfares: Prices increases, passengers seek alternatives
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

With less than a week until Eid al-Kabir, travelers are concerned about the sudden spike in airline prices.

In addition to causing anxiety, the crisis has affected all airlines and disrupted many people’s travel plans.

Experts in the field pointed to a number of potential contributing factors to the increase in ticket costs, including the suspension of Dana Air’s operations by Mr. Festus Keyamo, the expense of maintenance in foreign currencies, and the requirement to return aircraft from inspections.

Results also indicated that once-loyal Dana Air customers had started traveling with other airlines, increasing demand for their services and decreasing supply in the airline industry.

The typical Nigerian can no longer afford to travel by plane due to the consistent price hikes in recent years; instead, they would prefer to look for riskier but less expensive alternatives.

The country’s citizens are now uneasy and full of questions as a result of the hike. Stakeholders have actually been nervous about the development’s inability to find a long-term solution.

According to reports, Air Peace’s one-way outward and inbound tickets from Lagos to Abuja, which once sold for N85,800 to N238,200, now cost between N105,000 and N238,200. Comparably, a business domestic category ticket from Lagos to Asaba costs N238,300, while an economy flexible category ticket costs N105,000.

An economy flexible outbound one-way ticket costs at least N100,300 for anyone planning to fly on the airline from Lagos to Kano between June 11 and June 25, while a business domestic outbound ticket can cost as much as N190,600.

Travelers now have to pay at least N100,300 for the return trip in the economy flexible category from Kano to Lagos.

Between Lagos and Warri in the same time frame. An economy flexible ticket can be purchased for N105,100 to N114,500 for outbound travel, and N190,700 to N238,300 for inbound travel.

If you want to take a one-way outbound flight with Ibom Air from Lagos to Abuja between June 11 and June 25, the price range for an Ibom discount ticket is N105,100 to N124,100, while the Diamond ticket is N238,400 to N286,000.

Clarifying the matter, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, a spokesman for Airline Operators of Nigeria questioned why tickets should be sold for less money, pointing out that the cost of running an airline had increased dramatically.

In addition, Okonkwo emphasized that it was challenging to conduct business without raising costs given the cost of jet fuel, also known as Jet A1, and carrier fees. He claimed that any airline selling tickets for less than N150,000 was losing money.

What they’re saying

“Why are the operators selling tickets at a lower price in spite of the charges, taxes, and cost of aviation fuel?”

“I have stated time and time again that the airline loses money on any ticket purchased for less than N150,000. A round-trip ticket from Lagos to Abuja ought to cost at least N300,000.

Why this matters

Passengers are understandably frustrated by the sudden rise in prices, especially during a peak travel season like Eid al-Kabir. The airline industry, however, has legitimate reasons for the increase, citing rising operational costs like jet fuel and maintenance.

Final Thoughts

Finding a long-term solution likely involves addressing both concerns. Transparency from airlines regarding cost breakdowns could help. Additionally, exploring government intervention to regulate fuel prices or airline practices will be necessary.
