Wilson had 15 of 17 first-place votes from a national media panel to edge two other rookie standout-of-the-year candidates: Olivia Miles of Minnesota and Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell of Indiana.
“It’s big. It’s an honor for me to do it three straight times. It’s not easy,” Wilson said.
“My peers in this league, for me to do it three straight times here in the league, they’re really good.
I don’t take it lightly.”
That gives Wilson her fourth career AP WNBA Player of the Year award, also making her the first player in the award’s history (dating back to the 2016 season) to have received the most AP WNBA Player of the Year wins.
At the end of the year, Wilson was once again leading the league in scoring at 26.2 PPG while shooting the hell out of the ball on 52.9%. The 27-year-old added a career high of 9.4 boards per game, 3.2 assists and 1.9 blocks per game.
Nevertheless, Angel Reese took away Wilson’s throne as AP Defensive Player of the Year after Wilson had held the award for three of the last four seasons.
The WNBA postseason awards will be doled out throughout the course of the playoffs beginning Sunday.
