Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed the Upper Chambers commitment to pushing forward with the tax reform bills, despite potential intimidation. Akpabio made it clear that the Senate will not be forced into anything and will keep working for the good of Nigerians. He explained that the tax bills have not been dropped and that the Senate is committed to dealing with them because they include changes that could help ease the financial strain on people.
Akpabio also pointed out that the Senate is independent and does not follow orders from anyone, no matter how high their position. The Senate has given the Finance Committee six weeks to look at the bills, with the possibility of extending the time if needed.
In a recent update, the Senate changed the members of the committee that talks with the federal government team about issues with the tax reform bills. Tahir Monguno, who was the Senate chief whip, was replaced by Kaka Shehu, who represents Borno Central Senatorial District. This change was made to make sure that the principal officers are not on the committee, as was decided in a private meeting last week.
