Carlos Alcaraz grabbed the Italian Open crown Sunday in convincing fashion, taking out the world number one with a 7-6(5), 6-1 score, ending the Italian’s 26 match win streak and sending out a warning before Roland Garros.
Alcaraz is set to leap into the world number two spot on Monday and also as of today, has three titles in 2025 and has his second Masters 1000 title alongside Monte Carlo. Exhibiting fine form during this clay court season with a finals appearance in Barcelona after having missed Madrid with a thigh injury, the Spaniard arrives at the stage.
With this win, it has made it Alcaraz’s fourth final of the year, proving right away that he is a big threat to defend his Roland Garros crown. He remains the only person ever this season to have beaten Sinner in a tour final, having also defeated him in the China Open finals last year.
While Sinner missed the chance of being the first Italian man to win in Rome since Adriano Panatta back in 1976, his show remains a good comeback in this being his first tournament after a doping suspension.
That rivalry sets up a tantalizing possibility for a Roland Garros final with both men most likely top seeds in Paris.
