The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, (ANSIEC), has said that a total of nine political parties will be participating in the upcoming local government elections in Anambra State, scheduled for Saturday, September 28.
ANSIEC had made this revelation on Thursday, via a publication where the final list of candidates were unveiled in Awka.
According to ANSIEC, the political parties taking part in the elections include Action Alliance, (AA), Accord Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance, (APGA), Labour Party, (LP), New Nigeria Peoples’ Party, (NNPP), and Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP).
The other parties include Zenith Labour Party, (ZLP), Young Progressives Party, (YPP) and Social Democratic Party, (SDP).
APGA is the only party to have brought out candidates for all the 21 chairmanship and 326 councillorship positions. PDP had however, fielded 18 out of the 21 chairmanship and 228 out of the 326 ward councillorship positions.
NNPP fielded eight out of the 21 chairmanship positions and 37 candidates out the 326 councillorship positions. LP has however, fielded six candidate for chairmanship and 12 for councillorship positions.
Meanwhile, Accord Party had fielded four candidates for chairmanship and four for councillorship positions, while YPP fielded just three candidates for chairmanship and 44 for councillorship positions.
AA fielded just one candidate each for both the chairmanship and councillorship positions, while SDP fielded one candidate for chairmanship, and nine candidates for councillorship positions.
ZLP on the other hand only fielded four candidates for councillorship position.
The All Progressives Congress, (APC), did not field candidates as it officially withdrew from the local government elections, over claims of electoral irregularities.
The party had announced its decision to withdraw on September 8, and had revealed plans to challenge the election process in court.
