Bénin republic singer, Angelique Kidjo has just won the 2023 Polar Music Prize, one of Europe’s top music prizes on Tuesday, March 28.
The five-times Grammy award winner had been described by the organizers of Sweden’s Polar Music Prize as “one of the greatest singer-songwriters in international music”. Kidjo is well known for singing in her native tongue Fon and Yoruba languages as well as in French and English.
The Polar Music Prize was founded in 1989 by former ABBA manager Stig Anderson and the award honored Iggy Pop and US songwriter Diane Warren last year in 2022.
The laureates will receive 600,000 kroner ($58,000) as a prize during the ceremony that is scheduled to hold in Stockholm on May 23.
