The All Progressives Congress (APC) has swept the entire local government election in Lagos State, winning all the chairmanship seats across the 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas.
According to the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), the APC also secured 375 out of 376 councillorship positions across the state.
APC secures total control of Lagos grassroots politics
The announcement was made by LASIEC on Sunday following the conclusion of the polls. The results confirm the APC’s continued dominance in Lagos State’s local governance structure, with no opposition party able to clinch a single chairmanship seat.
In the councillorship race, APC candidates were declared winners in every ward except one, where the commission said the result was still under review.
Low voter turnout and opposition concerns
Despite the APC’s landslide win, turnout was reported to be low in many areas of the state. Some observers and members of opposition parties described the elections as lacking competitiveness, pointing to limited awareness and voter participation.
There were also murmurs among opposition groups about the transparency of the election process, though LASIEC has not reported any major incidents or irregularities. As of the time of this report, no official objections have been filed.
What this result means for local governance
By winning all the chairmanship seats and nearly every councillorship slot, the APC now holds total control over the grassroots government in Lagos. This gives the party a clear path to implement its agenda across all LGAs and LCDAs without internal opposition.
However, critics argue that democracy thrives on multi-party participation and that the complete sweep by one party may not reflect the diversity of public opinion across the state.
APC wins all Lagos LG elections, opposition fades
With all chairmanship seats and 375 out of 376 councillorship positions under its belt, the APC has consolidated its grip on Lagos State’s local government structure. The outcome, while legal and declared by the electoral body, has raised concerns about inclusivity and the state of opposition politics in the state. The APC’s total sweep will undoubtedly shape local governance in Lagos for the next four years, leaving observers to question whether the victory was about party strength or the absence of strong opposition.
