Arsenal have initiated discussions with Bologna over the potential transfer of highly-rated centre-back Riccardo Calafiori. The 22-year-old defender gained international attention following a standout season in Serie A and notable performances for Italy at Euro 2024, where his team was unexpectedly eliminated in the last 16.
According to reports from the Daily Mail, the Gunners are keen to secure Calafiori’s services and have made contact with Bologna to negotiate a deal. The North London club is also in talks with the player’s representatives, aiming to finalize the transfer swiftly amid competition from Chelsea, who are also vying for the young Italian’s signature.
Despite Arsenal’s proactive approach, Bologna is reportedly holding firm on their valuation of Calafiori. The Italian club recently rejected a bid of €47 million (£39.8 million) from Arsenal, according to Corriere dello Sport, insisting on a price closer to €50 million (£42.3 million). This high valuation is partly influenced by a clause entitling Calafiori’s former club, Swiss side Basel, to 40% of any future transfer fee.
Calafiori’s appeal to top clubs is multifaceted. His versatility as a left-footed centre-back who is equally comfortable playing at left-back aligns well with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s tactical preference for inverted full-backs. Similarly, Chelsea’s new head coach Enzo Maresca favors defenders who can operate effectively in central areas, adding to Calafiori’s allure.
Although Real Madrid, Juventus, and Liverpool have all been linked with interest in Calafiori, Arsenal and Chelsea appear to be leading the race. During his tenure at Basel, Calafiori expressed admiration for Chelsea, naming them among his preferred Premier League clubs, which could influence his decision-making process.
As the transfer window progresses, Arsenal will be eager to outmaneuver their rivals and meet Bologna’s asking price to bring Calafiori to the Emirates Stadium. The next few weeks will be crucial as the Gunners look to bolster their defensive ranks with this promising young talent.
