Aston Villa secured a deserved 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the Premier League, extending City’s dismal run to just one win in 12 games (D2, L9). The result propels Villa into fifth place, while City’s defensive struggles persist.
Villa started nicely at Villa Park, and Jhon Durán took advantage of Joško Gvardiol’s misplaced pass to threaten early before Stefan Ortega denied the Colombian. The breakthrough came in minute 16 when Morgan Rogers’ surging run concluded with a perfectly placed pass for Durán to tuck past Ortega.
Despite dominating possession, City couldn’t really make their pressure count into meaningful chances being created. A lot of involvement by Jack Grealish, but clear-cut opportunities were at a premium-Gvardiol’s wayward header was their best effort before halftime.
Villa began the second half on the front foot, with Matty Cash and Durán coming close to extending the lead. Rogers remained a menace, hitting the post before combining with John McGinn to net Villa’s second in the 65th minute. City offered little in response aside from a late consolation from Phil Foden deep in stoppage time.
The victory extends Villa’s unbeaten run at home to eight league games while Pep Guardiola’s side continues to struggle defensively, putting a big question mark on their title defense.
