The Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU), Ahmadu Bello University, (ABU), Zaria branch, has declared that the Nigerian federal government should be held responsible if they embark on strike.
The frustrated lecturers who made this revelation during a peaceful protest in Zaria had accused the Federal Government of insincerity and neglect, –a situation they said had exacerbated the living and working conditions of universities academic staff.
Meanwhile, Comrade Haruna Mohammed Jibril, the branch chairman had stated that the union’s demands include the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, funding for public university revitalization and payment of outstanding entitlements.
Jubril had also added that the federal government had underfunded Nigerian universities, leading to poor infrastructure.
Owing to these, he called on the general public to hold the Federal Government responsible if a strike action occurs.
Finally, he called for support from parents, students and stakeholders, to lend a helping hand in their struggle for better university funding and conditions.
