The Ambrose Alli University branch of ASUU has taken legal action against Godwin Obaseki, the governor of Edo State, over his decision to temporarily remove the activities of the Union in institutions owned by the state.
The Edo State Government had earlier suspended all union activities across all institutions of higher learning in the state at its State Executive Council meeting, on the 8th of June, 2022, calling on students to immediately resume lectures.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities has however taken the governor to the National Industrial Court sitting in Benin to request the court to overrule its pronouncement. The plaintiffs, Dr. Cyril Onogbosele and Dr. William Odion had asked the court to decide under Section 40 of the Constitution and Section 35(3) of the Trade Unions Act if the state government has the authority to interfere in union activities thereby suspending or prohibiting trade union activities in Ambrose Alli University.
They asked the court to declare his order unconstitutional, illegal, null and void, and beyond his jurisdiction.
