According to information released by TNT Sports Argentina, Barcelona is working on a bombshell offer to reunite with Lionel Messi for the 2026/27 season.
Having departed Barcelona in 2021 for economic reasons, Messi has played for Paris Saint-Germain and now Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS). Speculation is increasing about a possible return to Catalonia, though he is prospering in the U.S. Indeed, Barcelona are “slowly preparing” an offer with several terms to make his return home possible, according to reports.
The timing would coincide with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the U.S. is co-hosting with Canada and Mexico. Messi will be 39 at the start of the Spanish season in 2026, raising question marks over what he could offer at the top level.
Barcelona’s financial difficulties remain a major obstacle, highlighted by its recent request to the Spanish government for temporary registrations of players. But Messi also admitted he “really wanted” to return in 2023, before choosing Miami.
Inter Miami are still optimistic about retaining their star asset, with co-owner Jorge Mas declaring that he believes Messi will spearhead the team as they move into their new stadium in 2026. Whether he’ll wear Barcelona’s iconic No.10 again is still in question.
