The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Benue State University, BSU chapter, has commenced an indefinite strike over the school management’s incapability to keep to its promises with the lecturers.
This news of the strike was disclosed in a statement jointly signed by the Chairperson: Comrade Kwaghfan Tarnongo, and Secretary: Comrade Terrumun Gajir, of the union, on Friday, February 2, in Makurdi.
The academic union had however, cleared the Benue State Government of any wrongdoing and had instead, praised it for continuously funding the university.
The BSU chapter had also added that the national body of the union had approved its request to go on an indefinite strike, and this strike will persist until all demands were met.
The statement read:
“The national body of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has approved the petition by the BSU to resume the strike it had previously suspended on June 26, 2023.“The consent to proceed with this strike was officially communicated to members of the Branch on Thursday during an emergency congress.”
The union then went on to list its demands to include the execution and payment of accumulated arrears of 2021, 2022 and 2023 promotions and annual incremental steps.
Other demands were: April 2023 salary arrears to he paid, shortfall in the salaries of staff of the College of Health Sciences, payment of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) to be looked into and payment of sundry allowances.
The demands also comprise of the non-enrolment and implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme, amongst other issues.
