Following the death of Bolanle Raheem by a police officer on Christmas Day, presidential contenders from the APC, Labour, PDP, and NNPP demanded a prompt investigation into her death as well as reforms to the Nigerian police.
This was revealed in a separate statement by Labour Party’s Peter Obi, NNPP’s Rabiu Kwankwaso, APC’s Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and PDP’s Atiku Abubakar.
Peter Obi stated that her death could have been avoided if Nigeria had a well-trained and professional police officer who would not indulge in police violence.
Rabiu Kwankwaso urged for prompt investigations and the restoration of sanity to the Nigerian Police.
Bola Tinubu urged the Inspector General of Police and other competent authorities to expedite justice in the case, adding that the Police must “show even greater attention to the widespread implementation of measures aimed to protect professionalism within the service.
The PDP’s Atiku Abubakar stated that a probe into her death will act as a deterrent to future occurrences of the careless shooting of innocent civilians.
The Lagos State Command Commissioner of Police, CP Abiodun Alabi, expressed condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Barrister Bolanle Raheem, who was killed by a police officer in Ajah on Sunday, December 25, 2022.
According to the police, the rogue officer was arrested together with his team members on the Commissioner of Police’s orders.
The CP further ordered that the matter be forwarded to the Yaba State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
He acknowledged that such events had gotten excessive. A similar occurrence occurred less than three weeks earlier in the same area.
He did, however, state that the Nigeria Police Force will review its rules of engagement following this occurrence to put an end to such unnecessary nasty incidents
