The Islamic New Year of the Hijrah calendar will take place on Monday, July 8, 2024, which has been proclaimed a public holiday by the Borno government.
Monday will be marked as a public holiday in the state, according to a statement released on Saturday by Umar Kadafur, the acting governor of the state.
The decision, according to Kadafur, was made in observance of the Islamic New Year, which starts on the first day of the month of Muharram.
He claims that the purpose of the public holiday is to provide the Muslim community a chance to consider the significance of the Hijrah and to commemorate the Islamic New Year in a spirit of devotion and solidarity.
He explained that the Hijrah commemorates the Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) journey from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD.
Muharram is also one of the four sacred months of the Islamic calendar, as decreed by Allah (SWT) in the Holy Quran. The acting governor sent his warmest wishes to Muslims in Borno and around the world, hoping for a peaceful, happy, and fruitful new Islamic year.
He called on the Muslim Ummah to preserve the globally cherished principles of moderation, piety, tolerance, respect, dignity, and patriotism. In addition, Kadafur urged Muslims to live in harmony with adherents of other religions, promoting the kindness, charity, and brotherhood that bind all people together.
Bottom Line
New Year is a commendable acknowledgment of the cultural and religious significance of this event for the Muslim community. Observing the Islamic New Year, or Hijrah, provides an opportunity for reflection on the historical and spiritual journey of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Mecca to Medina, a pivotal moment in Islamic history.
