Adding to the already devastating flood disaster that has affected numerous communities in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, authorities have issued a new warning. The Borno State government has alerted residents to the threat of crocodiles, snakes, and other dangerous animals that have been washed into the communities by the floodwaters.
Deadly Animals Washed Into Communities
Reports indicate that the flood which caused widespread destruction has also affected a zoo, leading to several dangerous animals escaping into nearby communities. Ali Don Best, the General Manager of the Borno State Museum Park, confirmed the unsettling news in a statement on Tuesday.
“The flood disaster has disrupted and caused damage to properties, and we have lost more than 80% of the animals,” Best stated. “In addition to this, some deadly animals such as crocodiles and snakes have been washed into the surrounding communities.”
He urged the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions, adding,
“We are calling on the general public to be aware and take all the necessary precautionary measures to avoid these animals. We are working to ensure the safety and protection of the remaining animals in the park.”
Residents Advised to Exercise Caution
Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, further highlighted the risk posed by these displaced wild animals. The publication advised residents to be cautious when wading through pools of water, especially in flooded areas.
Flooding from Alau Dam Collapse Worsens Situation
The situation worsened after the collapse of the Alau Dam on Tuesday. The dam had been at full capacity for weeks, and its failure has now submerged several communities, including Fori, Galtimari, Gwange, and Bulabulin. Social media videos show the extent of the destruction, with streets, homes, and flyovers submerged underwater.
Many residents have been forced to flee their homes, navigating through floodwaters to seek safety. However, the presence of dangerous animals in the floodwaters adds an extra layer of danger. The flood has not only displaced thousands but also created a hazardous environment where residents may encounter wildlife in unexpected places.
The Bottom Line
The unfortunate flooding in Maiduguri wreaks havoc on both lives and properties in affected communities. The recent development adds unprecedented danger to the residents. Authorities are urging the public to remain cautious and to report any sightings of dangerous wildlife. The focus, however, remains on containing the damage and ensuring the safety of the remaining animals and people in the affected areas.
