Britain’s Conservative Party had announced on Monday that it will name its new leader on November 2, 2024 after the party suffered its worst-ever election performance earlier this month. This huge loss led to Rishi Sunak, the former prime minister formally announcing that he would step down.
Until the date given, Sunak will remain acting leader until the appointment of a successor, the Conservative Party’s statement revealed in a statement.
The leadership contest will see the party strip down the field of nominations to just four candidates who will make their case at the Conservative Party conference.
This nominations will still be narrowed down to two candidates, after which party members will vote for a leader.
The Times newspaper had said that up to eight candidates were expected to put their names forward.
Recall that Sunak’s election campaign failed woefully on July 4, when Keir Starmer led by the centre-left Labour Party, won a landslide victory landslide victory that ended 14 years of Conservative-led government.
In Sunak’s final speech outside the prime minister’s Downing Street office, he said that he would quit as leader of the party once the formal arrangements for his successor were concluded.
