Britain has announced the dispatch of approximately 200 air defence missiles to the war-torn country. The primary objective is to enhance the protection of civilians and critical infrastructure, offering a robust defence against Russian drones and bombing attacks, as confirmed by the British Ministry of Defence on Friday.

This strategic shipment comes in the wake of one of Russia’s most substantial missile assaults on Ukraine, as reported by Kyiv. The devastating attack resulted in the tragic loss of 18 civilians and left dozens wounded. Responding to these developments, British Defence Secretary Grant Shapps emphasized the significance of standing united against the aggressor.

In a stern message directed at Russian President Vladimir Putin, Shapps stated, “Putin is testing Ukraine’s defences and the West’s resolve, hoping that he can clutch victory from the jaws of defeat. But he is wrong.” This declaration underscores the commitment of the United Kingdom to stand resolute against any attempts to undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty.

The air defence missiles, proudly manufactured in Britain by the renowned defence contractor MBDA, boast advanced capabilities and are specifically designed for launch from various aircraft, including Typhoon and F-35 fighter jets, as highlighted by the defence ministry.

This substantial military support is part of Britain’s broader commitment to aid Ukraine, totaling an impressive 4.6 billion pounds ($5.9 billion) over a span of two years. The provision of advanced air defence systems reflects the international community’s collective effort to fortify Ukraine’s ability to resist external aggression and safeguard its people.

Defence Secretary Shapps called upon the free world to unite and intensify efforts to provide Ukraine with the necessary resources to secure victory.
