Red Devils captain Bruno Fernandes has admitted that his decision to spurn an offer with great financial benefits in Saudi Arabia this summer was only out of loyalty to the club and he wasn’t in any way concerned about his international future with Portugal.
Al-Hilal, a major club in the Saudi Pro League, made a £100 million bid for the 30-year-old midfielder, but he decided to keep playing at Old Trafford, where he has been an instrumental part of the team since his arrival in January 2020.
Before the Portugal World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland , Fernandes explained that the rumors about him staying to secure a place in the national team were not true.
“I didn’t close the door on a move to Saudi Arabia because of the World Cup,” he stated. “It was never my thought. I wanted to be at Manchester United, and the club needed me to be there. That’s all there is to it.”
Bruno Fernandes has been one of the very few positives from United’s poor season so far despite the club’s slow start to the league campaign – currently 10th after seven matches and early exit from EFL Cup – as he found the net twice in league wins over Burnley and Chelsea.
