Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari has joined Nigerian women in celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD), observed annually on March 8.

Buhari had taken to Twitter on Wednesday, March 8 to remark that he recognized the invaluable role women have been playing in advancing the progress of the country since the nation’s independence.

He then went on to pledge his administration’s commitment to ensuring equal opportunity for women in Nigeria, adding that in politics, Nigerian women were still mostly under-represented.”

Part of his tweet read:

“Today, on International Women’s Day, I salute the hard work and dedication of Nigerian women working tirelessly in their different fields of endeavor.

“We celebrate you all, from those sacrificing daily in their respective homes and markets and farms to those breaking barriers in education, sports, medicine, arts, entertainment, and even in politics.”
