In a closely watched election, Asue Ighodalo, a prominent businessman, has emerged victorious in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary race for governor of Edo State. The election, held on Thursday in Benin City, saw Ighodalo defeat other contenders, including incumbent Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu.
A New Chapter for Edo State
This election marks a significant moment for Edo State, as residents prepare to choose their next leader. Governor Godwin Obaseki’s term is coming to an end, and the people are eager to find a qualified candidate to succeed him.
Ighodalo Takes the Lead
The primary, held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, saw Ighodalo garner 577 votes, securing him the position of the PDP’s official candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial election in September 2024. Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, who served as the chief returning officer, declared Ighodalo the winner.
Shaibu Secures Only One Vote
Deputy Governor Shaibu, who participated in a parallel primary conducted by a different faction of the PDP, received only one vote in the official election.
Ighodalo Vows to Build Upon Success
In his acceptance speech, Ighodalo expressed his gratitude to the delegates, supporters, and the PDP for their trust and backing. He acknowledged the work done by Governor Obaseki and pledged to continue building upon the state’s progress.
A Humble Approach
“I am truly humbled,” Ighodalo stated. “I am grateful to the good people of Edo State. I’ve had the opportunity to meet many of them over the past four months.”
Building a Brighter Future
Ighodalo also commended Governor Obaseki for laying a strong foundation for the state and vowed to dedicate himself fully to its continued development. “I see myself as a tool in this process,” he remarked, “and I promise to be a good one. By God’s grace, Edo State will continue to flourish from where Governor Obaseki left off.”
Ighodalo’s victory follows a month-long campaign after he officially entered the race. It is important to note that a separate faction within the PDP had previously declared Shaibu as their candidate in a parallel election.
