In a significant shift of power, Egbetokun assumes the role of Inspector General of Police, succeeding Alkali Baba. The customary ceremony took place with the Vice President, Shettima, adorning Egbetokun with his new rank. This echoes the past occasion when Yemi Osinbajo, the former Vice President, had similarly bestowed the title of IGP upon Baba in 2021.
During the event, Shettima, accompanied by Egbetokun’s spouse, Mrs. Egbetokun, officiated the proceedings in the presence of esteemed government officials, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume; Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma; the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu; and the outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Baba.
In a conversation with State House correspondents on Tuesday, following his decoration as IGP, Egbetokun revealed his anticipation and eagerness to assume the role. He likened himself to a tiger, ready to prowl the corners of Nigeria and eliminate criminal elements. His enthusiasm for the position was palpable.
Expressing his sentiments about the weighty responsibility bestowed upon him, IGP Egbetokun declared his commitment to assuming office on Wednesday at 11 am.
He remarked, “At this very moment, I feel like a resolute tiger, poised to expel all criminals from our great nation. Yet, at times, I am a lion within, prepared to conquer the internal foes plaguing Nigeria.”
Nigerians are now left pondering whether Egbetokun possesses the ability to bring about a positive transformation within the Nigerian Police amidst the prevailing controversies. Will he initiate crucial reforms within the police force? Can he put an end to the pervasive issue of bribe-seeking officers? Is he capable of “policing” our Police to make them efficient and exemplary?
With his extensive experience in the police force, including his tenure as Commissioner of Police during Tinubu’s governance in Lagos State, Egbetokun is intimately familiar with the challenges afflicting the Nigerian police. Only time will provide the answers we seek.
