The Canadian government has ordered TikTok to cease all business operations in the country, because they are worried about national security issues connected to its parent company, ByteDance Ltd. This decision follows a thorough investigation and consultation with Canada’s security and intelligence community.
Francois-Philippe Champagne, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, stressed that the government is acting to deal with certain national security risks linked to TikTok’s operations in Canada. “The government has looked closely at the evidence and advice from our security and intelligence experts, and we are taking strong action to protect Canada’s interests,” Minister Champagne said.
The decision was made following a detailed examination of gathered evidence and information. Canada’s security and intelligence groups, along with other government departments, recommended this action. Importantly, this decision does not mean a complete ban on the TikTok app for Canadian citizens. The government still allows people to decide if they want to use the platform.
TikTok has said it plans to fight the government’s decision in court. A company spokesperson mentioned, “Closing TikTok’s Canadian offices and losing hundreds of good jobs is not good for anyone.” The company intends to challenge the closure order, worried about job losses and economic effects.
