Canada: PM Trudeau To Reshuffle Cabinet Amid Resignation Calls

On Thursday, 19th December, Trudeau’s office confirmed that the Prime Minister would be attending a swearing-in ceremony and chair a meeting with his newly appointed Cabinet later in the day.

This is as the Prime Minister is set to announce a Cabinet reshuffle on Friday in an effort to stabilize his government amidst the rising calls for his resignation and the mounting internal dissent within his Liberal Party.

Trudeau’s office confirmed on Thursday night that he would attend a swearing-in ceremony and chair a meeting with his newly configured Cabinet later in the day.

This move is coming on the heels of the Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland tendering his resignation on Monday- a development that has further intensified criticism of Trudeau’s leadership.

While a growing number of Liberal lawmakers are urging Trudeau to resign, the newly appointed Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc has maintained that the prime minister retains the “full support of his Cabinet.”

Trudeau has governed Canada for almost a decade but he now faces an increasing unpopularity wave over pressing issues such as inflation and the high cost of living.

At the moment, there is no immediate mechanism for his removal, but Trudeau has the option of resigning voluntarily or face a no-confidence vote in Parliament, but the latter could trigger an election that may favor the opposition Conservative Party.

Canada’s leadership crisis worsened earlier this week when Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland quit from Cabinet, citing Trudeau’s impromptu handling of economic challenges amid Trump’s tariff threats.

The Housing Minister, Ahmed Hussen had also resigned shortly before Freeland’s announcement.
