Millions of Canadians shunned traveling to the United States last year, choosing to take more trips within Canada and overseas, according to Canadian government data.

Visits by Canadians to the US fell roughly 25% in 2025, resulting in billions less in tourism spending. Canadians spent $13.3 billion in the US last year, down from nearly $15 billion in 2024.

The drop came amid heightened political and trade tensions between the Trump administration and Canadian officials. In April, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said President Trump’s tariffs had hurt auto and steel workers in Canada and stymied its economic growth. Trump’s suggestion that Canada should become the 51st state also strained relations, with Carney telling Trump that “Canada is not for sale.”

The Numbers

Canadian travelers logged 7.1 million fewer visits to the US in 2025 than in 2024. Domestic travel by Canadians rose by 5.1 million, a boost to Canada’s economy, while total visits to destinations outside the US rose by 1.3 million.

Canadian Tourism to the US Plunged 25% in 2025 Amid Trump Tensions

The decline reflects a broader shift in Canadian travel behavior. Canadians have historically flocked to the US for vacations and family trips, drawn by proximity and warmer weather. But political tensions and tariffs appear to have changed that calculus.

The Administration’s Response

White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said the Trump administration’s policies have benefited US tourism.

“President Trump has done more for American tourism than anyone, including by making our cities safe and beautiful again for all to enjoy and bringing major events like the Los Angeles Olympics and FIFA World Cup to the United States and Canada,” she said.

“The administration also spared no effort giving our country’s 250th anniversary the spectacle it deserved, which was witnessed by visitors from around the globe.”

The Bottom Line

Canadian tourism to the United States fell 25% in 2025 amid political tensions and trade disputes between the Trump administration and Canadian officials. Canadians spent $13.3 billion in the US, down from nearly $15 billion in 2024. Visits dropped by 7.1 million, while domestic and international travel outside the US rose. The decline came after Trump’s tariffs and his suggestion that Canada should become the 51st state.
