The Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, had on Wednesday, July 10, revealed plans for herders to start moving their cattle from the North to other parts of the country via railway service.

In a recent announcement by the NRC, the movement of cattle from the North to the Southern part of the country via rail will commence soon.

Thus disclosure was made by the NRC Managing Director, Fidet Okhiria, while making an appearance on Channels Television’s “The Morning Brief” breakfast show.

This development is coming less than 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu announced the creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development to provide for the lingering crisis between herders and farmers.

What They’re Saying

Okhiria was quoted to have said in the show:
“You are not developing transportation because you want to make profit in terms of Naira and kobo but the profit will come indirectly if we can move goods and link cities.”

Why It Matters

The establishment of this new ministry will mean that resources will be allocated for funding, hiring administrative staff, and infrastructure and in light of Nigeria’s economic challenges, one questions whether this allocation is justified.

In addition, the creation of this ministry does not really address the herder-farmer conflicts and is more likely a means to serve the interests of our politicians.
