Defending champions Real Madrid face Manchester City in a blockbuster UEFA Champions League showdown for a place in the last 16. The first leg will be played at Etihad Stadium on 11/12 February, with the return leg at Santiago Bernabéu a week later.

Real finished 11th in the league table and were one point short of the top eight to qualify directly. Elsewhere, Manchester City clinched their place in the play-offs with a 3-1 comeback victory at Club Brugge on the final day, finishing 22nd.

Champions League Play-Off Final: Real Madrid to face Manchester City

The two clubs have a storied rivalry in Europe, having met 12 times in the competition. Although City have won four to Madrid’s three (D5), Los Blancos have a much better record against English sides, eliminating them 13 times in Champions League knockout rounds — only behind their 16 eliminations of German ones.

The draw also produced some other intriguing matchups. In all-French affair, Brest meets Paris Saint-Germain, and Serie A powerhouses Juventus and AC Milan match up against the Dutch sides PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord, respectively. The recent scoreline has been in Juventus’ favour, with the Bianconeri winning five of their past eight clashes against Dutch clubs (D2 L1), while their city rivals were last victorious in 2008.

In other matches, Bayern Munich visit Celtic of Glasgow, Borussia Dortmund welcome Sporting CP, Club Brugge take on Atalanta, and Monaco play Benfica.

Bayern Munich was able to avoid automatic qualification to the knockout stages of the tournament with a strong finish in the group stages but Borussia Dortmund, under soon-to-be head coach Niko Kovac, will seek advancement against Sporting.

The play-offs are high stakes for everyone competing, as only the victors will take their place alongside the top eight in the last 16. The next round’s draw is also on Feb. 21.
