Nigerians have shown their unstoppable spirit once again as Temitope Adebayo, famously known as Tope Maggie, reportedly shattered the Guinness World Record for marathon cooking. Tope, a chef from Ogbomoso, outdid Irish chef Alan Fisher’s 119-hour and 57-minute record. Remember when Alan broke Hilda Baci’s record? Well, Tope’s triumph proves Nigerians are focused and relentless goal-getters.
In a TikTok video titled ‘The record is broken, congratulations to Nigeria, Oyo State, Chef Tope Maggie,’ Tope celebrated amidst his supporters.
Tope’s accomplishment marks a significant win for Nigeria, reclaiming the title for the longest continuous cooking from Alan Fisher, who recently dethroned chef Hilda Bassey after her 93-hour record. Tope’s culinary journey began at the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State, where he studied Hotel Management. His expertise in cooking was inherited from his mother, earning him the nickname ‘Maggie.’
Managing a chain of restaurants in Ogbomoso, Tope’s achievement raises interesting questions. Despite his remarkable feat, he didn’t receive as much support from Nigerians as Hilda did. Was our backing for Hilda solely because she’s a woman with a beautiful figure? Her image was everywhere. Also, while Alan received swift recognition from GWR, Tope is yet to receive the same acknowledgment. Does this hint at bias or even racism in the recognition process?
Congratulations to Chef Tope Maggie for his incredible feat!”
