Chelsea restarted their Premier League campaigns with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Newcastle United to improve that remarkable record against the Magpies at Stamford Bridge to just one defeat in 30 home league games. Chelsea had made a good opening where Nicolas Jackson broke the deadlock on 16 minutes by tapping in a cross from Pedro Neto, following excellent build-up play that was initiated by Cole Palmer.
Newcastle finally replied with a goal from Alexander Isak in the 32nd minute as he scored past a cross from former Chelsea man Lewis Hall, which represented Chelsea’s 5,000th conceded top-flight goal. Chelsea did not waste any time in restoration of their lead in the second half as Palmer surged through Newcastle’s defense to score low and powerfully past Nick Pope.
Dominant throughout, Chelsea’s midfield duo of Moisés Caicedo and Roméo Lavia frustrated Newcastle’s attempts to find the equaliser. Chelsea held firm despite a few scares-one including an Isak effort cleared off the line by Wesley Fofana-as it sealed the win. Chelsea move to fourth, while a winless streak of five leaves Newcastle in 12th position with pressure mounting on Eddie Howe’s side.
