American pair Gabriel Slonina and Caleb Wiley are likely to be the first out the door as new head coach Xabi Alonso moves to remodel the Chelsea squad ahead of the coming Premier League season.
The arrival of Alonso in the Stamford Bridge hot-seat is likely to prompt an exodus of several players looking to get first-team football regularly. Among those looking set to be out are the young US internationals Slonina and Wiley, who haven’t been able to force their way into the first team set-up in west London.
Goalkeeper Slonina arrived at Stamford Bridge from MLS outfit Chicago Fire in 2022 but is yet to make a senior start for the Blues. The 22-year-old has already had a stint on loan at Eupen, Barnsley, and the Fire, and the Belgian loan has proved most successful to date, despite the side’s relegation.
Defender Wiley, who arrived in west London in 2024 from Atlanta United, has had an equally frustrating time to date, with the 21-year-old having a loan move with French side Strasbourg prior to joining Watford for a second spell with the second-tier club, the injuries impacting the young defender’s time in Hertfordshire.
The duo has several years remaining on their current Stamford Bridge contracts, but both will surely be seeking loan moves or permanent departures from the Blues this summer in a bid to resurrect their careers in the sport and push their claims for USA call-ups in the run-up to the 2030 World Cup.
