Chelsea’s reign as Xabi Alonso prepares for his tenure, will no doubt be remembered with their impressive 3-2 success over Fulham, but despite the performance, it also highlights issues within the Chelsea defence that will prevent the Blues from challenging for the Premier League title.
Cole Palmer was inspirational throughout on the wing but finished with one goal to his name as well as an assist for Joao Pedro, while the impressive debut of Morgan Rogers confirmed that Alonso has an attacking force to be reckoned with this season to cause many Premier League defenses problems.
Returning to his best form following a struggle last season, he produced 5 shots on goal, 5 key passes and 5 dribbles until being subbed late on, suffering from a bout of cramp while the attacking powerhouse should remind opposition of his devastating spell on this Chelsea team.

However, there were a host of problems at the back as Fulham registered 14 shots and continued to carve out pockets of space in Chelsea’s defensive area. Robert Sanchez struggled during both goals while his communication with the defenders looked to be lacking, which will put concern throughout the squad. Alonso confessed Chelsea had much to work on still and admitted the team must develop this new system.
The Blues will also surely feel pressure at the highest level if Enzo Fernandez leaves, but a move to Man City could see the Londoners struggle. With questions being asked over finding a replacement, it also highlights one major weak point within the Chelsea squad.
The battle for the Premier League could be decided when Chelsea come up against Arsenal on September 6 to face the defending champions; however, with an attack like Chelsea’s, they really need to build around it and defend at a much higher level if they wish to be considered a genuine title contender.
