“Taiwan Is None of Your Business,” that was the blunt response from Beijing after U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that President Xi Jinping assured him there would be no invasion of Taiwan during his time in office.
Trump made the statement during a Fox News interview, while preparing for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. His claim quickly caught attention around the world, raising questions about how far Washington and Beijing are willing to test each other over Taiwan.
But China wasted no time in rejecting Trump’s version of events, insisting that Taiwan is strictly a Chinese matter and not open for debate with any foreign leader.
Taiwan as China’s Internal Matter
At a press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning was clear: “The Taiwan issue is purely an internal affair of China, and how to resolve the Taiwan issue is a matter for the Chinese people.”
She repeated Beijing’s long-standing position that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, stressing that while China prefers peaceful reunification, it will not tolerate any attempt to split Taiwan from the mainland.
Taiwan Responds to Trump and China
Taiwan’s foreign ministry, reacting to both Trump’s comments and Beijing’s sharp pushback, said it continues to closely monitor interactions between senior U.S. and Chinese officials. Taiwan made it clear that it will keep working with partners, especially countries with strong interests in the Indo-Pacific region, to safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
For Taiwan, the United States remains its strongest supporter and top arms supplier, even though the two sides do not have formal diplomatic relations.
A Sensitive Flashpoint Between China and the U.S.
China has never hidden its goal of reunification, and it has not ruled out the use of force to achieve it. Taiwan, however, strongly rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claim, insisting on its right to self-rule.
This standoff has become the most sensitive issue in U.S.-China relations. Every remark from Washington, and every warning from Beijing, adds fuel to an already tense situation. Trump’s comments only made the spotlight brighter, forcing China to publicly state again: Taiwan is not for negotiation, and Taiwan is not America’s business.
The Bigger Question
The bigger question now is whether such statements will further strain ties between China, Taiwan, and the United States. For China, the message was firm and clear, Taiwan Is None of Your Business.
