The expanding CIA gold bar heist probe has taken a direct turn into the highest levels of the U.S. defense establishment. Federal investigators have questioned Steve Feinberg, the Deputy Secretary of Defense and second-in-command at the Pentagon, as part of an ongoing FBI inquiry into former intelligence officer David Rush. Authorities raided Rush’s home in Virginia and seized 303 physical gold bars valued at over $40 million, alongside $2 million in cash and dozens of luxury timepieces. While law enforcement officials clarify that Feinberg is not accused of criminal wrongdoing or listed as a subject of the investigation, his past working relationship with Rush has placed him under an intense public light.

Court records paint a picture of how a veteran intelligence officer allegedly siphoned vast federal resources for years. Investigators allege that David Rush created a completely fake, highly classified special access program under the pretense of “continuity of government operations”. Operating inside a black-box program with zero external oversight, Rush requested and secured tens of millions of dollars in gold bars and foreign currencies under the guise of operational costs. FBI affidavits reveal Rush built his career on fake credentials, claiming he was a decorated military test pilot and holder of degrees from top universities he never attended. An internal CIA inventory audit failed to locate the massive precious metal reserves, prompting a referral to the FBI and the subsequent raid on Rush’s residence.

Why the CIA Gold Bar Heist Probe Involves Steve Feinberg

The connection between the disgraced ex-officer and the billionaire Pentagon deputy centers on past national security projects. Steve Feinberg, founder of Cerberus Capital Management, previously led the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board, where he originally crossed paths with Rush.
Earlier this year, Feinberg advocated for Rush to take on an expanded role in a sensitive, highly classified military initiative focused on China. Officials emphasize that Feinberg was entirely unaware of the criminal investigation into Rush when he made those recommendations. Nevertheless, the FBI interviewed Feinberg to determine how Rush managed to maneuver through top-level security circles while running an elaborate multi-million dollar fraud scheme right under the government’s nose.

My Take

The details emerging from the CIA gold bar heist probe point to a massive failure in how America’s national security agencies handle high-level oversight.
It is shameful that a single officer could invent a fake classified program, convince colleagues to sign off on budget transfers, and walk out with 303 physical gold bars without triggering immediate alarm bells. For years, the phrase “classified for national security” has been used to block public checks and balances. But when secrecy turns into a total lack of accountability, bad actors can exploit the system.

Steve Feinberg may not have broken any laws, but his involvement shows how easy it is for well-connected figures to give cover to fraudsters. When top leaders vouch for individuals without rigorous background checks, it exposes serious security vulnerabilities. If a man can fake his university degrees, lie about being a military pilot, and store $40 million in government gold in his suburban home, then our security clearances and internal auditing systems are deeply broken.

The government needs to audit these hidden, special access programs top-to-bottom. Real accountability means pulling back the curtain on “black box” budgets so that public funds and actual gold bars are never stolen like this again.

Bottom Line

The CIA gold bar heist probe remains one of the most embarrassing security failures in recent memory, exposing how unchecked secrecy can lead to fraud. Restoring public trust will require far more than arresting one rogue agent; it demands a total change of how covert budgets and senior officials are monitored.
