The Nigerian Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board has decided to do something rather astonishing, they’ve suspended two senior officers at Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre in Lagos. This move comes in the wake of claims from none other than Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, who recently found himself in a tight spot after being convicted for abuse of naira notes. Now, instead of serving time like any ordinary convict, Bobrisky boasts that his “godfather,” with help from the top ogas of the Nigerian Correctional Service, arranged for him to serve his six-month sentence in a private apartment.
The drama was sparked when activist Martins Otse, aka VeryDarkMan, leaked a voice note where Bobrisky made these astonishing claims. As a result, the powers that be had no choice but to suspend the Deputy Controller of Corrections, Michael Anugwa, and his colleague, Sikiru Adekunle, both stationed at Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre. This was confirmed in a memo dated Thursday, signed by the Board Secretary, Ja’afaru Ahmed.
The memo cited a viral video making rounds on social media where Bobrisky’s luxurious imprisonment was exposed. In response, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board quickly reacted to this and suspended the officers “with immediate effect.”
According to the memo, these suspensions are just the first step. Ja’afaru Ahmed assured the public that the investigation would dig deep into the alleged infractions. Meanwhile, the suspended officers are left waiting for the “proper investigation” to either exonerate or crucify them.
Stay tuned as we await the final verdict on whether Bobrisky’s “luxury prison” tale is true, and whether heads will truly roll in Nigeria’s ever-scandalous correctional system.
