A recent incident where a vehicle using Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) exploded at a gas station in Benin, Edo State, highlights the importance of strict safety rules for converting and maintaining CNG vehicles.
The Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) has once again promised to make sure CNG is used safely in Nigeria, pointing out the key differences between CNG and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) tanks.
“CNG tanks are built to handle higher pressures, up to 200 bar, while LPG tanks only handle 7 bar,” said a SON representative.
To avoid similar accidents, SON has asked CNG gas stations to do thorough checks to make sure vehicles have approved conversion kits and are serviced at authorized centers.
SON has also launched the Nigerian Gas Vehicle Conversion Scheme (NGVMS), which has a list of approved CNG equipment and suppliers.
