Kenneth Okonkwo, a former chieftain of the Labour Party (LP), has stated that only a coalition can defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election. Okonkwo, who was the presidential campaign spokesperson for the LP in 2023, emphasized that no single candidate can challenge President Tinubu successfully. He pointed out that winning an election in Nigeria requires more than popular support; securing victory also depends on elite backing. “In Nigeria, you need the elites to secure your victory, even if the people vote for you,” Okonkwo said during his interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.
Coalition Reminiscent of 2014 Could Be the Answer
Okonkwo compared the current political situation to the events leading up to the 2015 election when a coalition of elites successfully confronted then-President Jonathan. “In 2014, the elites came together, and in 2015, they secured their victory when the people voted for them,” Okonkwo said. He believes this same strategy is essential for the opposition to make any impact in 2027. Without a coalition, Okonkwo predicts that Tinubu will “walk into” the presidency uncontested.
Possible Coalition in 2027 Election
While there is speculation over who might lead the coalition, Okonkwo suggests it could be a partnership between Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar. Although the specifics remain uncertain, Okonkwo stresses that a coalition is the only viable option for the opposition to make any real difference in the 2027 presidential race. This comes amid discussions about a potential coalition led by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
The opposition has seen increasing defections recently, with Delta State Governor Sheriff Oberevwori joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This highlights the ongoing shifts within Nigeria’s political landscape. Okonkwo’s comments emphasize that a coalition could be the key to challenging Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Coalition the Key to Defeating Tinubu in 2027
Okonkwo strongly believes that the only way to defeat Tinubu in 2027 is through a coalition. As the political sector evolves, it’s clear that forming a united opposition front will be essential for any challenger hoping to disrupt Tinubu’s continued rule. The success of the coalition will depend on how well the opposition can align their interests and work together for a common cause.
