Nicolas Petro, the son of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, has been taken into custody by the attorney general’s office in connection with a money laundering and illicit enrichment probe. The arrest took place early on Saturday.
Nicolas, who is a politician in Atlantico province, had shown willingness to cooperate with the investigation when it was initiated in March. He has vehemently denied any accusations of accepting money from drug traffickers in exchange for supporting his father’s peace initiatives.
Alongside Nicolas, his ex-wife Daysuris del Carmen Vasquez was also arrested. She previously claimed that two individuals linked to drug trafficking had given money to Nicolas for his father’s campaign, alleging other acts of corruption as well.
In response to the arrest, Petro expressed his sadness that one of his children had been detained. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the attorney general’s office would adhere to the legal process in handling the case.
