Justice Bassey Nkanang of Akwa Ibom State High Court has sentenced Uduak Akpan to death by hanging for the human slaughter of late Iniubong Umoren.
Umoren, was a graduate of Philosophy at the University of Uyo when Uduak murdered her as she was job hunting for April 2021 as she was waiting to be mobilized for NYSC. The trial judge, Justice Bassey Nkanang had set the judgment date after the Prosecution and the Defence Counsel adopted the final written addresses.
The three persons that stood trial for the homicide case were Uduak-Abasi Akpan, the first accused person, Frank Akpan, and Anwan-Bassey Akpan the second and third accused person.
The Law Court however discharged and acquitted Frank Akpan and Anwan-Bassey Akpan, who were the second and third accused persons.
Uduak-Abasi Akpan, who had invited the deceased for a fake job interview, stood on trial on a two-count charge of rape and murder.
The second accused person, Frank Akpan who was the father of the accused, had been charged with accessory after the murder, and the third accused man, Anwan-Bassey Akpan, Uduak Akpan’s sister had been charged with harboring her brother in her residence in Calabar to assist the accused to escape the law.
